Indian Recipes

Native American Indian recipes have been in existence for hundreds of years.  Based on the area tribe was located and what available meat and vegetables were available would determine the diet.

Native Americans are expert hunters, gardeners and gatherers. The ability to identify edible plants is a skill, which had been taught and been passed down from generation to generation. Berries, nuts and vegetables would be combined with meat to form stews.  There are many Indian recipes available online.  Do you want to try an Indian recipe?  How about a Venison stew lets type in Native American venison recipes into our favorite search engine.  As you see there are many mouth watering Indian recipes are available.

In most cases the men did the hunting and the women did the cooking.  Venison has always been an important staple of the Native American.  Buffalo was at one time also a major staple.

The key to survival for Native Americans was to maximize what was available around them in nature.  You will find that Native Americans use all of any animal they hunt.  This provides for some rather unique Native American Indian recipes.  Some people might think eating deer heart is disgusting but in some Native American tribes this is a favorite Indian dish and is considered a delicacy.

One of the most popular Indian recipes is for a food called Hominy.

Hominy is simply dried corn that was harvested in the fall.  Hominy is allowed to dry completely before being stored.  Once dried it can be kept in a cool dark place and will stay good for a very long time.  In some cases Hominy can stay fresh for up to a year.

Hominy is usually mixed with other vegetables and meats.  This mixture is then added to water to form a rich and highly nutritious soup or stew.  The Vegetable stew was made using Hominy and available vegetables, meats and nuts.

Next time you are in the mood for hearty and healthy food be sure to do some research and try one of the many available Indian recipes.
